InkHunter App Review: Is AR Tattoo Try-On Still Worth It?

A review of the InkHunter app built from its App Store listings, version history, pricing SKUs and thousands of user ratings. No fake hands-on claims, no padding.

Summary

InkHunter app is the best-known AR tattoo try-on tool, still at 4.7 stars on about 25K App Store ratings. We audited its public record instead of faking a hands-on test. The AR idea holds up for placement checks and studio consultations. The weak points are an aggressive paywall, editing controls users say vanished after the 2024 AI update, and near-empty release notes. Verdict: 6.5/10.

6.5 /10

InkHunter app is a long-running AR tattoo try-on tool that still holds 4.7 stars across about 25K App Store ratings. Its core idea works for placement checks. The AI update left reviewers complaining about missing editing controls, and premium SKUs run from $6.99 to $59.99. Fine for a quick look, careful with the subscription.

  • Reviewers say the AI update removed opacity, rotation and photo upload controls
  • Seven premium SKUs from $6.99 to $59.99 with frequent paywall prompts reported by users
  • Release notes are generic: 23 of 25 listed versions say little beyond bug fixes

This is a desk audit, not a 30-day hands-on test, and we want that stated before any score. We did not install the app or run prompts through it. Over 15 and 16 October 2026 we read the US App Store pages for INKHUNTER - AI Tattoo Design and INKHUNTER PRO, the official inkhunter.co site, its Product Hunt page, press coverage, and a sample of written user reviews on the App Store. We counted ratings, listed every in-app purchase price, counted the 25 versions in the public changelog, and grouped complaints and praise into themes. We could not read Reddit threads in full, could not load the official Google Play listing, and found no Trustpilot, G2 or Capterra page, so we give no numbers for those. Scores below judge the evidence, not our fingers on the screen.

Should you install it?

YES if you...

  • You already have a design and want to check size and placement on your own arm before booking
  • You are a tattooer who wants a quick client-facing preview to explain why a spot works or fails
  • You are curious about a tattoo and want a free, low-stakes look, and you will skip the paywall

NO if you...

  • You need a finished, original design generated from a description and a stencil your artist can use
  • You want fine editing control such as opacity, rotation and multi-photo upload, which recent reviewers say are gone
  • You are on Android and expect a verified official listing: we could not confirm one
  • You dislike subscription traps and will not read a paywall carefully

ROI breakdown: If the $6.99 SKU is the weekly plan users describe, one year costs $363.48, about six times the $59.99 top SKU. For one placement check, the $0.99 PRO app or the free tier is the sane route.

Hidden costs & gotchas
  • Weekly billing is easy to start by accident through paywall prompts, according to reviewers
  • The two apps are separate purchases, and PRO is an older codebase
  • The free tier reportedly limits you to two uploaded designs
  • Cancelling happens through Apple subscriptions, not inside the app

Pros and cons

The honest ledger

Pros

  • AR preview answers the placement question Seeing a design move with your forearm tells you more about size and position than a flat mockup. Press coverage and studio reviews agree on this.
  • Long track record and a large rating base About 25K ratings at 4.7 on the main app and 2.6K at 4.8 on PRO. Apple named AR try-on among its 2017 trend picks, according to the official site's badge.
  • Useful as a client-facing consultation tool A tattooer's review explains using it to show a client why a spot suits or fails a design, which is the most credible professional endorsement in the record.

Cons

  • Reviewers say editing controls vanished after the AI update A July 2024 one-star review lists missing opacity, rotation and upload from the camera roll, and says the result looks like a pasted sticker.
  • Paywall pressure and unclear billing periods Seven premium SKUs from $6.99 to $59.99, a reviewer quoting a roughly $6 weekly plan, and pop-ups every few minutes. Read the confirmation screen.
  • Almost no public explanation of what changed Of 25 listed versions, 23 carry generic bug-fix wording. Users cannot tell whether a lost feature was removed on purpose.
  • Not a design tool, and no stencil export is documented The AI generator is a feature of the app, but nothing on the public pages mentions a clean stencil your artist can ink from.
Verdict

Final verdict

6.5 /10

InkHunter earned its reputation. It showed a whole category that a phone camera could stand in for a felt-tip pen, and 25K App Store ratings at 4.7 do not appear by accident. If you already have a design and want to see it on your forearm tonight, the free download or the $0.99 PRO app can do that job.

What holds the score at 6.5 is everything around the core. The 2024 AI update split the reviews, the billing periods are not clear on the public page, and a changelog that says bug fixes 23 times in 25 entries gives users no way to follow what is happening to the features they liked. None of that kills the app, but treat any subscription prompt as a decision.

Use it for placement. Do not treat a screen overlay as a stencil, and do not let it replace a conversation with your tattooer. If you also need to generate and iterate on designs, compare a combined tool before you pay weekly.

Common questions

Is the InkHunter app free?
The download is free, but the listing shows in-app purchases and a reviewer says gallery designs are locked and only two uploaded designs are free. Premium SKUs run from $6.99 to $59.99.
Does InkHunter work on Android?
The official site links to a Google Play listing under the package tattoo.inkhunter, but we could not load it. Several look-alike listings with other package IDs rate 1.5 and 2.7, so check the developer name before installing.
How accurate is the InkHunter AR try-on?
We did not measure accuracy. Press coverage describes a calibration step with marks drawn on the skin, and one current App Store reviewer says you still have to draw on yourself first.
What is the difference between InkHunter and InkHunter PRO?
PRO is a separate $0.99 app listed as no ads and no watermark, 4.8 on 2.6K ratings. The free app is the newer AI version at 4.7 on about 25K ratings.
Can InkHunter replace a tattoo artist's stencil?
No. It shows a preview on screen. Nothing on the public listings documents a stencil export, so your artist still draws or prints the final stencil.
How do I cancel an InkHunter subscription?
Through your Apple ID subscription settings, not inside the app. Check the billing period on the paywall before confirming, since reviewers mention a weekly plan.
Why do some reviewers say the update ruined the app?
A July 2024 review says the AI version dropped opacity, rotation and photo upload and leaves a pasted-sticker look. The developer's release notes do not explain it.
